As part of V-Day's 2002 Worldwide Campaign, the groundbreaking, Obie-Award winning "The Vagina Monologues" played to a SOLD OUT crowd of 3,100 in San Francisco's Masonic Auditorium on Tuesday, February 12, 2002, starring writer, director and V-Day founder, Eve Ensler.
V-Day San Francisco 2002, hosted by Susie Tompkins Buell and the Family Violence Prevention Fund, raised $500,000 for V-Day and 24 local groups dedicated to stopping violence against women. The benefit was produced by Melissa Howden with consulting by Reinis Productions and Theatre on the Square, commercial producers of "The Vagina Monologues," in addition to support from more than 50 community members and over 100 volunteers.
In addition to the benefit performance held on the 12th, V-Day San Francisco inspired a week-long series of events that sparked a renewed community commitment to stopping violence against women and girls.

The "V" in V-Day stands for Victory, Valentine and Vagina.
V-Day, the global movement to stopping violence against women and girls, is going grassroots and global for V-Day 2002 with a 12 week calendar of events and social action campaigns anchored around Valentine's Day. Following last year's sold-out V-Day 2001 benefit at New York City's Madison Square Garden (which featured a performance of V-Day Founder and Artistic Director Eve Ensler's play, "The Vagina Monologues," by 70 of the most notable women of stage and screen), V-Day 2002 will encompass more than 700 benefit productions of "The Vagina Monologues" in theatres, houses of worship, and college campuses around the world. In cities and provinces from Shanghai, China to Harlem, NY; Sacramento, CA to Nova Scotia, Canada; from Duluth, MN to Cebu City in the Philippines (and our very own San Francisco), an international chorus of voices will rise up to entertain and empower, as women live out V-Day's mission to stop violence against women and girls.
V-Day is non-profit. The money that passes through V-Day and that is raised on its behalf comes from individuals, corporations, foundations, product and book sales, and benefit and commercial performances of "The Vagina Monologues." V-Day funds are directly donated to grassroots, national and international organizations and programs that work to end rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery.
