How serious is the problem of domestic violence?

Family violence is occurring with astonishing frequency:

  • As many as 4 million American women report being physically abused by their husbands or boyfriends each year... and one in four American women say they have been battered at some point in their lives. Of women who are murdered, one fourth of them were killed by their husbands or boyfriends.

  • Up to three million of our children witness parental violence each year. Family violence devastates children, almost always affecting them for life.

  • Family violence hurts all of us - it can hurt our daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts, granddaughters, and close friends who may be in violent relationships.

  • It destroys families in our communities, and can cause those children to lash out and hurt others - or grow up to become violent adults who inflict violence on the next generation.
