Planned Giving

Charitable Bequests For General and Endowment Support

A simple way to leave a planned gift to the Family Violence Prevention Fund (FVPF) is to make a bequest in your will or living trust. With a charitable bequest to the FVPF, you can provide FVPF with important support of its general operations or long-term support for its general operations through their Endowment Fund, or direct the annual distributions from your gift to one or more of our programs. You can make a bequest of cash, securities, real property, or personal property. You may also contribute a percentage of your estate or the entire residue of your estate. Your estate will receive a charitable estate tax deduction for the full value of the donation, so your estate will not pay estate tax on these assets.

Below, we have listed some of the more common kinds of bequests, and if you click through the different types, you will find some sample bequest language. Note that the following sample language must be tailored to meet your specific situation and estate planning documents. We always recommend that you carefully review the terms of your will or trust with your estate planning counsel.

Recommended Steps

To ensure that your testamentary goals are achieved, we recommend that you:

  • Make a list of the individuals and organizations that you would like to support.
  • Make a detailed list of your assets (financial, real estate, vehicles, jewelry, collectibles, etc.)
  • Make an appointment with your attorney to prepare or update your estate planning documents.
  • Notify our staff and discuss your intentions with them.
FVPF is not engaged in rendering legal or tax advice. This document is designed to provide information about charitable bequests. Donors are urged to seek the advice of their estate planning counsel.

Donations of Stock

Your tax deductible gift will allow you to bypass capital gains taxes.

Publicly traded securities, stocks, bonds and mutual funds may be donated to FVPF at their present fair market value, including any "paper profit" in the stock. In this way, you avoid the capital gains tax that would be due if the securities were sold. In most cases, you also can claim an income tax deduction for the full market value the day of the gift. Closely held stock also can be an excellent way to make a donation.

If you are interested in donating stock, please contact, Rachael Smith Fals at 415-252-8900 ext. 53.
