Opportunities for Prevention: Addressing Intimate Partner Violence in the Healthcare Setting

Research shows that lifetime exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) has significant short- and long- term health consequences. Concerted efforts toward prevention are needed to identify methods to reduce the impact of IPV on health and to prevent IPV. The focus of this article is the health care response to IPV prevention.

The USPSTF Recommendation on Intimate Partner Violence: What Can we Learn From It and What Can we Do About It

The third USPSTF concluded that there is insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening for IPV in the primary care setting. This thought-provoking article describes the Task Force’s current methods to evaluate preventive practices and develop recommendations, examines the systematic evidence reviews for screening for IPV and several other services that are recommended by the USPSTF, and identifies strategies to address gaps in the evidence and to promote a more equitable assessment of IPV as a preventive practice.
